Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Blake DeWitt's three-run homer in the sixth provided the difference, and the Cubs began a weekend series against the Mets with a 7-6 victory at Wrigley Field. DeWitt hit his fourth home run in just 30 games with Chicago since a midseason trade with the Dodgers, and the Cubs improved to 7-3 under interim manager Mike Quade. Alfonso Soriano also hit a three-run shot in the victory, while Xavier Nady went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Randy Wells allowed four runs, eight hits and four walks in the start, and John Russell (1-1) earned the win for retiring the only batter he faced. Carlos Marmol ended up with his 26th save of the season. David Wright hit a solo homer among three hits and drove in three, as the Mets fell for the fourth time in five games. Luis Hernandez added his first home run with the team in defeat. R.A. Dickey (9-6) squandered an opportunity to set a new career-high in wins after giving up a season-worst seven runs on eight hits and a walk in six frames.

Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - Curtis Granderson doubled twice and drove in three runs, as New York beat the Toronto Blue Jays, 7-3, in the opener of a three-game series at Yankee Stadium. Brett Gardner hit an RBI triple and scored three runs for the Yankees, who have won seven games in a row to match a season-high set from July 3-9. New York rookie Ivan Nova did not figure in the decision after allowing three runs and six hits over 4 2/3 innings. Kerry Wood (3-4) earned the win in relief. Travis Snider went 2-for-5 with a solo home run for Toronto, which has dropped four of five. Brandon Morrow (10-7), who made his final start of the season, gave up five runs on six hits and three walks in just three innings. Morrow suffered his first loss since June 29 at Cleveland. He had gone 5-0 with a 3.88 earned run average over his previous nine outings. The Blue Jays are shutting down the former reliever because he has reached his innings limit for the season.
